Use of Tener

The verb tener (conjugation) is used:

  • to express age
  • Tengo veintisiete años.
    I am 27 years old.

  • to indicate possession
  • Yo tengo dos perros.
    I have two dogs.

  • to indicate obligations
  • Yo tengo que aprender las palabras.
    I have to learn the words.

  • to express sensations
  • Tengo calor, por favor encienda el aire acondicionado.
    I am hot, please turn the air conditioning.

  • to express a desire to do something
  • Tengo ganas de verlo.
    I feel like seeing him.

  • to substitute haber (auxiliary)
  • Tengo recibido su catálogo.
    I have received your catalog.

  • in idiomatic expressions
  • tener cuidado
    to be careful
