Sayings (proverbs) are phrases or sentences commonly used in different countries. They cannot be literally translated word by word. There are some sayings in English that, eventhough they have different words, transmit the same message. Let's look at some examples:

Dime con quién andas y te diré quien eres.
A man is known by the company he keeps.

A lo hecho, pecho.
Don't cry over spilled milk.
or
What's done is done.

A palabras necias, oídos sordos.
Foolish words fall on deaf ears.

Donde hubo fuego, hay cenizas.
Where there is smoke, there is fire.

Quien calla otorga.
One who is silent, gives consent.

Quien mucho abarca, poco aprieta.
One should not bite off more than one can chew.

Quien mucho habla, mucho yerra.
Loose lips sink ships.

Afortunado en el juego, desafortunado en el amor.
Lucky at games, unlucky at love.

Haz el bien y no mires a quién.
Do the right thing without hope of reward.
