Spanish Grammar Writing in Spanish Graves
Overview

Graves are also called "llanas". They are the words that have the stress (acento) on the second to last syllable:

suegros - in-laws
blusa - blouse
muela - molar

Graves have a "written accent" when they end in a consonant except n, s.

álbum - album
césped - grass
difícil - difficult
huésped - guest
árbol - tree

There are some exceptions: Graves that end in "s" preceded by a consonant have a written accent:

bíceps - biceps

Also when there is need to break a diphthong:

guía - guide
