Ser is also used to describe people.

In relation to physical appearance adjective endings change when you are discussing masculine vs feminine.

Mi hermano es alto.
     My brother is tall.
La niña es alta.
     The girl is tall.

él means he
ella means she

Él es muy guapo.
     He is very handsome.
Ella es guapa.
     She is pretty.

Él es bajito.
     He is short.
Mi mamá no es bajita.
     My mom is not short.

Él es delgado.
     He is skinny.
La maestra es delgada.
     The (female) teacher is skinny.
