Tener has many different uses.

Tengo veintisiete años. (expressing age)
      I have 27 years (I am 27 years old).

Yo tengo dos perros. (expressing possession)
      I have two dogs.

Yo tengo que aprender las palabras. (expressing obligation)
      I have to learn the words.

Yo tengo dolor de cuello. (expressing feelings)
      I have a pain in my neck.

     Tengo ganas de dormir. (expressing desire to do something)
      I feel like sleeping. (I want to go to sleep.)
