Por and para are both used in specific situations.

   Use por for a place or an area:
Estuvo por el barrio.
      It was for the neighborhood.

   Use por to express per:
Tuviste una hora por día para colorear.
      You had one hour per day to color.

   Use para to show use:
Me preparé para ganar.
      I prepared myself to win.

   Use para for specific time:
¿Ya se apuntó para hoy?
      Did you already sign up for today?

   Use para to say being:
Fue muy caro para un anillo.
      It was very expensive for a ring.
